Essential Questions:
How does the Flapper represent the "new woman"?
Were the 1920's successful for the women's movement?
Flappers represent the "new women" by doing things they want, and not having to live under their husbands. Now, they can do whatever they want, such as: smoking, drinking, changing their appearance, and voted. The 1920s was a success for the women's movement because whatever they didn't get, they fought for it until they had the same rights as men.

Flappers
How did the flappers change the view of women in the 1920's? Some women started to change, and it was mostly young women during the 1920s that weren't adults yet. They were called the "Flappers" and existed after WWI in Great Britain. Flappers are women who party, drink, smoke, vote, cut their hair, etc. and didn't follow the rules. Their behaviors were truthfulness, and had sexual behavior. They started to smoke, which surprised their parents, wore tons of makeup and talked to other women's husbands. Their clothing showed a lot of skin, and their hair was cut into a "bob." Some of their men died, and didn't want to be sad/stress, so to get that out of their mind, they became who they are. Flappers also changed the dating concept in the 1920s. Usually women just sat at home waiting for a wonderful respectable men to ask them on dates and marriages, but the flappers didn't care and started to go out and date. |
Women's Gains
What gains did the Women's Movement make during the 1920's? Before the women's movement, women couldn't do anything after she was married. She couldn't own anything, can't keep any money, and weren't even supposed to care for her kids! The woman and the children were inferior to the men. Women said it was unfair, so they organized a group called the National American Woman Suffrage Association. This movement was to have equality. They did everything they could: protested and rioted. Their main focus was to be able to vote. The reason is because they believe that having the right to vote would make sure the laws would be passed. Not only that, they wanted new divorce laws, better working condition, property laws, higher wages/education, and the right to take care of their children. |
Differences from the Progressive Area
How was life different for women in the 1920's compared to the Progressive era (1900-1920)? During the Progressive era, there were women who worked, and barely had anytime to do anything. When the 20s came, they had more freedom and more fun because of the creation of the flappers. |
Thinking Like a Historian ~ Change and Continuity
The women of the 1920s fought for equal rights, and while we do now have equal rights, we still face a lacking of total equality. While women have the same rights as men they do not have the same pay or social treatment, particularly in the circumstance with "slut shaming", where if a woman has a lot of sexual partners, she is a "slut", a word with a very negative connotation, but if a man has a lot of sexual partners, he is a stud, which is often viewed as a positive accomplishment. We are still fighting for the freedom of expression that the flappers and women of the 1920s so strongly pushed for.
