How popular culture is in the 20’s different than the previous decade
Popular culture became more popular than the previous decade because for one, things moved faster. Mass media and entertainment changed the way Americans lived in the 1920’s. Luxury items became more available and fitting for the time period. Items such as Magazines, radios, and cars especially helped to improve society immensely - news was able to spread faster and further especially the people who lived in the rural areas. Horse and Buggy became scarce and in efficient. This increased the demand for people to want to know more about what was going on around them. People became more involved. Traveling to sporting events in the Golden age of sports was for all social classes. Attending games such as Baseball, boxing and football became common. Popular movies, and well appreciated theaters became more possible to attend and increase popularity. Mobility, desire to learn and improve all aspects of society, and communication became much easier relevant to the 1920’s time period than the times before.

The Automobile
How did the automobile change life in the 20s? Prior to the 1920s the main mode of transportation included either walking on foot or hitching a ride on the back of a horse buggy to wherever they needed to go. This invention was able to give the economy a boost along with the Americans’ sense of freedom. Transportation became more widespread and popular. Henry Ford helped to advance our way of lives by his improvement of the assembly line and automobiles. Henry Ford was recognized for introducing the “Model T” car along with mass production which helped products to get on the market faster and cheaper, along with making it easier to repair. The car dropped from 825$ to 360$. Many referred to this time as being the automobile revolutionized life time. The other automotive titan was Alfred Sloan. |
The Radio & Movies
What was the impact of radio and movies on life in the 20's? The radio was invented in 1879 and in Pittsburgh was where the first radio station opened up. They were very bulky, loud, and heavy and had poor reception. This was a very convenient and cheap way to spread news to the masses. The radio had few channels usually including news involving world affairs, concerts, and sermons. One of the first included the air broadcast station KDKA. The movie industry really became popular in the 20s. Some of the big producer names that still can be seen today included the following companies: Warner Brothers, MGM, Columbia Pictures, 20th century fox, RKO, and paramount. In the year of 1920, 800 films were produced alone. Silent films were the first to take a step towards the films that are produced now. Steamboat Willie” was the first Disney film that introduced the world to Mickey Mouse. The world was becoming more interconnected. The aspects of society that were being affected the most included manners, dress codes, and drinking. Young citizens were more susceptible to learn and habit immoral beliefs. Drinking was one example of this. For instance, they would portray the idea that drinking was luxury, party lives and sophistication all entailed. |

How did the airplane change society in the 20's? After world war one, there was not created much use for the Airplane. Nothing that useful and serious was involved with the airplanes until the federal government came up with the idea of air mail. This was because it was to be known as one of the fastest and most durable advantages that the mail business had, up until this time in history. The airplane was even used as a source of entertainment when pilots would bring planes to carnivals and fairs, providing air shows including tricks and danger for thrills. The middle class soon earned the right to use the planes as means of transportation soon after the Wright Brothers invented the flying machine. This however meant more deaths during war times because of the advanced weapons and machines. What impact did Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic have on society? Lindbergh was the first American to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. Because of his love of challenges and his plane named “spirit” he also flew to South America. He became the first chief pilot flying airmails and helped to advance the art of the aircraft to serious travel tool. The twenties was such an innocent time, and people were still so religious, people felt like this man was sent by God to fly. Iit changed aviation forever because all of a sudden the Wall Streeters were banging on doors looking for airplanes to invest in. Aviators had been standing on their heads trying to get recognition, but after Lindbergh, suddenly everyone wanted to fly. |

How did advertising change how things were sold in the 1920's? Mass production and lowering prices on goods were a good way to catch more peoples’ attention. Having the better slogan, brand names, having a popular athlete, artist or hero for their campaign was a popular strategy to capture consumer’s attention and memory. Advancing a company’s sales was achieved by convincing consumers that their products were either better than what they formerly produced or outweighs the prices of their competitors. Reforming the theme from war help, they changed it to a matter of bettering the society with the culture of consumerism. Some companies were even hiring psychologists to help them make their first campaigns. Ladies home journal and Saturday Evening Post were the first advertising magazines to hit the market. Advertisement ranged from pursuing products for clothing and beauty, to lawn care. These tactics of advertisement are still used today. Although the strategies of using babies to sell cigarettes and claim that they are healthy is actually illegal. Coca Cola was introduced to cure headaches, revive, and sustain a person for the consumption of this “Fun Food”. Still this company is one of the largest and most recognizable food companies in America. There was also a lot of muckraking showing corruption during this time around the same time Henry Luce published “time” magazine in 1923. |

Why were the 1920's known as the "Golden Age of Sports"? The 1920's were the golden age of sports because radios, for one, were most of what the masses listened to and lead to their greater interest. The most famous sports included basketball, boxing, baseball, horse racing, and football. A major aid to the mass interest was the ballparks that the government made affordable for every social class to attend. Baseball diamonds were created also for citizens in many towns to enjoy and attend. Schools were also including sports within their curriculum. The Olympics first started in 1924 in Paris. The events at the Olympics included the 400-meter, 800-meter, water skiing and grey hound racing which started in Great Britain. Another significant start for the 1920s and sports was the women’s talent was showing competition for the men. Gertrude Ederle was breaking men’s times for swimming the English Channel on August 6, 1926 swimming the time of 14housr and 31minutes. Babe Ruth was one of the most famous team members of the Yankees teams, and even to this day his name remains well known. Other well-known athletic icons in the 20s included the popular and honorable players: Babe Ruth, Bobby Jones, Jack Dempsey, Knute Rockne, and several others. |

The amount of Americans there was tremendous. Prior Knowledge ~ All I knew was that the invention of the airplane was one of the hugest successes invented during the 20s. I could never conjure the complete impact the flight might have had on so many Americans. Audience ~ The intended audience was to inform the public about what is happening in New York before the plane had left for Paris. Showing the public that his test flight had went well and that there should be an elevated confidence level throughout the public. This was a learning experience as long as an experience within uncharted territory in the free airs of America.
