the roaring 20's
Are the social aspects of the 1920s area mixture of new permissive events or modernism which collide with the old Victorian standards and social mores of the past?
The 1920s were indeed a mixture of old and new. With every rush of new freedoms, traditional beliefs held resistance; with African American pride and growth, racism and intolerance also bloomed; with modern teachings of evolution comes the challenge of religion. While the younger generation was trying to break free from social norms and express themselves, they were challenged by traditional conservative views. However, things must change because movements may start slow but they start out of peoples needs and they grow and there is great power in numbers. People come together and work together to achieve their common goal.
While the 20s was a decade of great change in and of itself, it also served as a starting point for further change. While in the 20s African Americans began a cultural movement to show their equality, the battle was brought further in the 50s and 60s to legally gain their equality; and today their is also a cultural and legal movement of gay pride and gay marriage. While in the 20s the extensive immigration of southern and eastern Europeans was feared, today we also face an extensive immigration of Mexicans. While in the 20s one gas-guzzling car fit a family, today the average family has two or three cars which are becoming more and more advanced and fuel efficient. While in the 20s industrial workers were still gaining rights and the factories: regulations, today US factories are pristine in comparison to the foreign factories we have now outsourced to. The 1920s were a time of great change and we have carried on that pattern.
